How do I adopt a dog?
Please be sure to read the TRC adoption application requirements. If you meet or exceed them, then fill out an application on line, at an upcoming event, or we can mail you one. Once the application has been received and reviewed--you will be contacted by a volunteer. We adopt in New England, parts of NJ, NY and PA. We will verify your references, do a home visit, and assist you in picking the dog that's right for your situation.
I don't live in MA or NH. Can I still adopt a dog?
Depending on whether we have a volunteer or member to do your home visit, etc. - we can usually place a dog outside of MA & NH to other New England states as well as to SOME parts of New York and New Jersey.
I am approved to adopt by another rescue group. Can I adopt from TRC?
If the other group that approved you will share your information with TRC - and it meets TRC requirements and standards--then YES, after a phone interview with a TRC volunteer---you will be able to adopt from TRC.
I want to meet some of your dogs before I apply to adopt one. How do I meet them?
All interested people are encouraged to meet the TRC dogs are the various Meet & Greet events that are scheduled every month at various locations all over New England. You may also fill out an adoption application at these events to start the process of adopting the dog you are interested in. Those dates and locations of the very successful Meet & Greet events are listed under EVENTS on the TRC web page.
Once you fill out an TRC adoption application and are approved to adopt--you may meet the dogs at these Meet & Greet events OR schedule a private meeting directly at the foster family's home to see the dog you are interested in, in its own environment. Only people who have an approved adoption application may schedule foster home meetings with a dog.
From start to finish--processing an adoption application may take 5-10 days depending on the volume of adoption application and the availability of volunteers to process them. TRC tries hard to streamline the process and get our great TRC dogs into great homes in a timely manner. Dogs are placed on a first come, first served basis, and we strongly suggest you apply sooner than later if you meet a dog you think you want to adopt.
How do I give you my dog?
Depending on available foster homes---TRC sometimes takes in owner surrendered dogs. That particular dog MUST pass an evaluation and must be up to date on all vaccinations, HW tested, spayed or neutered and turned in with a substantial donation to cover care and expenses for 6 months. Please be sure to read our procedures for surrendering your dog.
Why should I adopt a rescued dog? Isn't it in rescue because it has problems?
Generally the biggest problem that one of our rescued dogs has is that it is homeless. Since we temperament test all of the dogs before making them available for adoption, we eliminate possible problem dogs before they become TRC dogs. People surrender dogs for many reasons - divorce, moving, change in lifestyle. Some dogs are stray. Sometimes the dog's owner dies. Sometimes we'll never know.
What do you mean that dogs are “evaluated”?
All dogs entering the TRC program MUST pass a temperament evaluation. Only dogs passing the strict testing are allowed into the program. Testing includes handling by a human, social skills with other animals and people, how the dog behaves around his food and toys, and willingness to accept leadership.
How can I make a donation?
Donations of materials and equipment can be arranged by sending an e- mail to TRC. Any monetary donations can be mailed directly to our address or you may make a donation using PAYPAL. TRC has several Special Funds that your own dog can make a donation to as well. Please consider sponsoring one of the TRC dogs coming into the program. TRC maintains a Wish List, and your donation is tax deductible.
If I donate money to you, where is it going?
TRC's biggest expenses are veterinary care and kennel space for rescued dogs. We also have administrative and office costs (phone, postage, etc.) which is a small portion of our expenses comparatively. TRC members are volunteers and draw no salaries.
Can you recommend a trainer?
In the New England states, we have a listing of rottie-friendly dog trainers listed under REFERENCE MATERIALS on the TRC web page. If you know of a trainer who encourages responsible rottweiler ownership, and have first hand experience, please email us and we'll add him or her to the list.
I know of a rottweilers that is being mistreated. Can you take the dog?
TRC HAS NO LAW ENFORCEMENT AUTHORITY TO TAKE ANY DOG FROM SOMEONE'S PROPERTY. You should contact your local animal control or Humane Society and see if they can get the owner to relinquish ownership to THEM. Once the dog is in the safety and custody of animal control--we can be contacted to come evaluate the dog. You are welcome to also call us once the dog is in the custody of animal control.
Why do some dogs have EverGreen before their names?
TRC likes to name the dogs after the areas that they came from. Evergreen is the name of a street in Newark that has a large animal shelter on it. Many many dogs in the program come from this shelter, after they pass the strict TRC evaluation.
What does it mean to foster a dog? What do you do as a foster family?
Dogs generally come in from the shelter and spend several weeks with an interim family before going to their permanent home. The interim "foster" family works with the dog on any training it needs - whether it's house training, obedience training, or just recovering from spay/neuter. The foster family also helps determine what type of home is appropriate for the dog, and helps the adoptions team direct applicants to the right dog. You can apply to foster a dog on our web site.
What are your hours?
TRC is operated by all volunteers. There is no paid staff. Because there is no physical shelter, all work regarding dogs, applications, phone calls etc. is done on a volunteer's own time. Formal Meet & Greet events are scheduled in advance and will be posted on the TRC web site. You are welcome to attend any of these events to meet the available dogs and volunteers.
How do I get there?
Since TRC has no brick and mortar shelter--all dogs are in various experienced foster homes learning new things every day. Dogs may be seen at the Meet & Greet events that are scheduled almost every weekend all over the North East US. Directions are also on the web site.
How can I tell if my dog is overweight?
My homeowners insurance is going to be canceled because I own a rottweiler. Do you know of any insurance carriers who I can contact?
We know several. However, they all ask that we not broadcast their names on the internet. Please read about homeowners insurance before emailing us about surrendering your animal. More insurance information The AKC also maintains an Insurance Information site.
