Holly 189 Three year old, 35# female found on the rooftop of a building in Manhattan. She can not stand up and her body is literally a skeleton with fur. This is the single worst case I've ever seen. 11/18/03 - Rachel did bloodwork and put her in IV fluids. We'll have results today on whether her body had already started shutting down. Photos 11/25/03 - Holly was admitted to Rowley in Springfield. Rowley is the equivalent of Tufts and Angell near Boston. Their estimate is about $1200. The local ER vet couldn't do what needed to be done, he said. They are thinking it's pneumonia, but are not saying concretely. she was on oxygen all night as she was only taking in 80% of what she shoudl have been. She is anemic, but not as bad as they thought (which her bloodwork at Sterling also said). She is in critical condition. I had to make the decision to resusciate her if she went into cardiac arrest (I said manual CPR for a short period and if that didn't work, let her go to God). If they determine that she just need fluids and IV, we will take her home and do that here. 11/26/03 - 10 a.m update. spoke with Dr. Schlesinger at Rowley and then Dr. Keisling (Rachel) subsequently this morning. Holly is still having difficulty breathing and is on IV fluids with anitibiotics (Baytril and Ampicillin). They did another round of bloodwork and Rachel will give them the bloodwork from last week for comparison as well as the report from their internal person regarding Holly's rehydration schedule. Rachel has some insight here that Rowley wouldn't have because of the first round of bloodwork!! SHe will have chest rads this afternoon They are thinking she has one of three things (I know which one I think it is) 1. She is a debilitated dog who can not fight infection - upper resperatory turned lower resperatory (pneumonia) 2. She has extreme hepititis and (something else I wrote down wrong that Rachel didn't understand). 3. She has a refeeding syndrome (no food, then eating, sets electrolytes off and gives a diabetic response) I told her that I have another dog in the house with upper resperatory and what we had been doing. They will be inserting a feeding tube today. They'll call this evening with a report. They said the anemia is really significant right now. 10 p.m. update: It is with much sadness that I announce that Holly went to the bridge. She went into cardiac arrest and could not be revived. Holly knew love for a week. Probably more than she had ever known before. We will miss her.
