The Michigan Mission
Many counties in Michigan practice what is called "Pound Siezure". In these cases, Class B dealers purchase stray animals (for ~$10 each) from the the shelters and sell them to research facilities, among other places at a tremendous profit (several hundred to thousands of dollars). Most people can only speculate the torture these animals endure. TRC, in conjunction with Rottweiler Rescue of Michigan, has agreed to periodic transports of evaluated dogs from these shelters. The Michigan Mission is an ongoing project and will always need funds.
Latest Update ~ Good News!
County OKs partial ban on animal sales (Michigan)
Source: http://www.lsj.com/news/local/030611_animals_1b.html
Ingham County commissioners early today approved a ban on the sale of animals from the county animal shelter to Class B dealers for resale. But they will continue to allow animals to be sold directly to Michigan State University, the University of Michigan and Wayne State University for scientific and veterinary purposes.
What does this mean? This means that the Michigan Mission's urgency is not what it had been. Dogs will still be sold, but the dealer isn't able to snatch up the animals the day they are available - they are available to the public first. AND THEN, once their time is up, the dogs will be humanely euthanized by injection.
TRC will continue the Michigan Missions as needed. Rottweiler Rescue of Michigan will notify us when they are needing help. In the meantime, please watch for the exciting adoptions of the great dogs who have joined our program!
Michigan Mission III
Yes, you can't keep good rescue folks down. Michigan suddenly has more rottweilers in their shelters and the dealers aren't getting to them as fast as we are (we hope). On May 13, we will undertake MMIII. There are as many as 7 dogs coming on this run. We're not sure HOW we're going to put them all in our truck, but we're going to give it our all. Why not help us out and sponsor one of these great rottie children! Coming in on May 13, two males from Ingham, a female named Diamond, #11, Sadie and Morgan from Jackson (or was it Eaton?) and one other. We need your help. In addition to getting all of the rotts from our area into safe situations, we're helping these guys too. The truth of the matter is that euthanasia is better than torture, and if these dogs were going to be euthanized, then it would be humane. But instead they will be tortured before euthanized. I wonder how we, as a country, can get away with something this inhumane.
Please meet...
Diamond - This frightened but beautiful girl was impounded as a stray on April 30. Her owners called that same afternoon and said they would be right in to pick her up. They still haven't? If they are kind people, Diamond would be very grateful if they would come take her home.
Sadie is perfect with everyone, very loving, not at all hyper and whines to let you know she has to go potty - loves to go for car rides - big, beautiful bitch with absolutely no bad traits - this is a bitch I would keep in a heartbeat if I could... (words from Arlene). Sadie was turned in because she was "too protective" with a new baby in the house. Not "aggressive", protective. This is a dog who is the sweetest, gentlest girl ever - I'm sure she adored and fussed over her baby. ~Special thanks to Beth Gordon for sponsoring Sadie!~ ~Sadie was adopted by Erika from MA! ~
Suki - fka #11 - is perfect for a new rottie owner! She's a tiny little girl who is perfect with cats, kids, male dogs, female dogs - she is pure love and not overly energetic! She is very sweet, a little shy, but likes cuddles. She also has wonderful leash manners! ~Suki was adopted by Chris & Shelly from MA! ~
Morgan - from Jackson County - is wonderful with people and gets along with other dogs (tho is silly in her crate when they walk by). On June 1, Morgan was diagnosed with heartworm, which is being treated. Morgan will remain in foster care until the treatment is completed. She is a wonderful dog that her foster family adores! ~Special thanks to Harry LaFond for sponsoring Morgan!~ Morgan is named in memory of Morgan LaFond.
Rory - Tucked away in isolation becuase he's "aggressive", Arlene couldn't find a mean bone in his body. But this is, again, where the "really nice" dogs are saved for the dealer. Rory has had a hard life and the shelter did NOT want him going back to his original owners. Rory's favorite trick is "high five" - which he does OFTEN. ~Rory did not join the Michigan Mission III Run. He is safely in foster care in Michigan. ~
Otto - also tucked away in isolation. This fantastic man loves everyone he meets and loves to ride in the car. Otto is giong to make someone a great friend! ~Special thanks to David & Alyson Stellos Hartsock for sponsoring Otto!~
Michigan Mission II
April 24, 2003 - Meet Kia, Chloe, Dutchess and the unnamed little lady who was surrendered for "CHEWING".
Katie: This little bit was surrendered for chewing. Chewing what? We don't know. Her foster mom adores her, and everything about her is fantastic. Katie is learning basic manners and commands, loves her crate, and lives with a cat and another rottweiler. Katie never will have to fear for her life again! ~Thanks to Becky Randall for sponsoring Katie! ~ Katie was adopted by the Johnsons of Massachusetts!
Dutchess: This one was being saved for the dealer by the shelter. We can only figure it's because her personality was so WONDERFUL that the labs would be thrilled to have her. Dutchess is stellar - she is house trained, crate trained, and obedience trained. She rides well in the car, and walks well on lead. What more could you ask -well except for a forever home!
Chloe: Isn't Chloe incredibly wonderful?! This stunning dog is as sweet as she can be and a real favorite with all the volunteers and especially the staff that care for her at the shelter. Chloe is obedience trained, possibly spayed and a true delight. She gets along with other dogs and is loving and affectionate with everyone she meets. Chloe was discovered in Stockbridge. Her owners have been notified she is at the shelter but they can't afford to bail her out. So she is waiting for you to come take her home so she can be your best friend forevermore.
Kia: This darling young girl has just finished weaning a litter of puppies. More than likely she was bred during her first heat at 10 months of age. What on earth is wrong with people? And as if that isn't bad enough they apparently dumped her when they no longer needed her. That's ok tho, she deserves a new home that's as wonderful as she is. Inger is full of hugs and kisses and loves people with all her heart. She will sit beside you for as long as you let her with her head nestled gently in your lap looking up at you with adoring eyes. Inger is waiting for you to take her home so she can share the rest of her life with you. Kia was adopted by the StJeans of Massachusetts.
Dale will be driving on Monday, April 28 to Michigan to get these kids. She could really use Prepaid Gasoline cards or funds for gas - donate through Paypal .
Let's help these great dog get even greater forever homes! Thank you in advance!

The First Caravan
November 8, 2002 - Meet Windy, Sapphire, Jeager, Kara, and the "little sweetie". These rotties are waiting for a ride from the Lansing MI county shelter to TRC. Our heroines, Nancy & Holly, left their beds in the wee hours on November 8, loaded up a comfortable van from Penske (THANK PENSKE!) and drove. And drove. And drove. And then got lost (we'll be sending them through Massachusetts on the way home. Vermont country roads in the fog are tough on anyone!). At 11:45 p.m., the bewildered, sleep-deprived crew pulled in.
March 20, 2003 -TRC is pleased to announce:
Kara was adopted by Laurie & Kris, and their Great Pyranese Dusty and Boston Terrier Libby. Kara now lives on a lake in NH, where she watches the snowmobilers during ice fishing derby day. :)
Cali was adopted by Steve & Cindi and their rottie boy Baron from CT. Cali and Baron play and play and play. And play. Cali will be starting obedience classes, and has fit in perfectly with her new family's lifestyle.
Klaus - now Teddie - was adopted by Amy and Michael from MA. He spends his days now with his cousin (another rottie) and has started doggie school on the Cape. Klaus was the first Michigan dog to find his home.
Willow was adopted by Cyndi and Ed and their family from CT. They had recently lost a dog to cancer, and she has fit right into their family since she moved in. Willow was the second Michigan girl to go home.
Jeager is still in foster care, where he is affectionately known as the "black & tan throw rug." He is far more concerned about your moving his LL Bean bed to vacume under it, than anything else in life. Jeager was adopted by Gloria and Rachel Eno from New Hampshire on June 8, 2003!
Sapphire is now at the rainbow bridge after showing some unpredictable - and dangerous behaviors. Not ever dog can overcome what they previously endured. Sapphire is out of physical and mental pain, and is waiting for her heroines, when their times come.

Here's Holly - And Here's Nancy. They left their beds in the wee hours on November 8, loaded up a comfortable van from Penske (THANK PENSKE!) and drove. And drove. And drove. And then got lost (we'll be sending them through Massachusetts on the way home. Vermont country roads in the fog are tough on anyone!). At 11:45 p.m., the bewildered, sleep-deprived crew pulled in. More to come on these kids!!!
The crew was unloaded, exercised, fed, and tucked in for the night. Klaus' shining temperament was ever-present through out - He was the best traveller of all of them!
THANK YOU Holly! THANK YOU Nancy! You made ALL the difference in the world to these six dogs.
